Mission and Purpose: 

The purpose of the Communications Committee is to increase member participation through the use of clearly communicated information provided by The Board of the Online Intergroup of Alcoholics Anonymous (OIAA) and its standing committees. Using inclusionary practices that will ever increase the participation of diverse national identities and language groups, this committee will maintain consistency across all modes communications used by the OIAA Board and its standing committees. The Communications committee will have only one vote and that vote will be made by the person serving as Chairperson at the time a vote is taken.

Roles: 

The Chair and Alternate (General) Chair:

An Alternate (General) chair will assume the duties of the chair person in the absence of the chair.

Qualifications

It is suggested that the Chair (Alt Chair) have:

Minimum of 5 years of continuous sobriety.

Education or experience equivalent to managing an AA Intergroup Central Office (IGCO) or another small business.

Working knowledge of OIAA as demonstrated by previous experience on OIAA committees as an IGR or individual member.

Experience working in a multicultural, multilingual online environment.

The Chair (Alt Chair) will:

  • Work with the Technology committee to maintain design consistency.
  • Work with the Archivist to build working archive of OIAA history.
  • Liaise with standing committees and the OIAA Board.
  • Select appropriate Alternate Chairs who will guide the development of the following subcommittees:

Alternate Chairs: are responsible for the development, design and management of sub committees focused on specific areas of OIAA communication needs.

When the Chairperson of the OIAA Communications committee requires a substitute, the Chair will contact the appropriate Alternate committee chair.

Ideally, when the Chairperson of the Communications Committee rotates out of service one of the Alternate chairs will move into the Chair position.

Each sub-committee may elect a secretary, as needed.

Alternate Chair of video production:
Qualifications

  • 2-5 years or more of continuous sobriety.
  • Working knowledge of OIAA as demonstrated by previous experience on OIAA committees as an IGR or individual member.
  • Education or equivalent experience in:
    • Producing short Power Point presentations and videos using various modes and software programs.
    • Developing video production schedules.
  • Ability to:
    •  Substitute for the Chair as needed.
    • Liaise with standing committees and the OIAA Board, as needed.
  • Comfortable working in a multicultural, multilingual online setting.

Alternate Chair of Document Management
Qualifications

  • 2-5 years or more of continuous sobriety.
  • Working knowledge of OIAA as demonstrated by previous experience on OIAA committees as an IGR or individual member.
  • Education or equivalent experience in:
    • Drafting, editing and proofreading professional documents and websites.
    • Create and analyze surveys.
  • Ability to:
    • Step in for the Chair as needed.
    • Liaise with standing committees and the OIAA Board, as needed.
  • Comfortable working in a multicultural, multilingual online setting.

Alternate Chair of Translation and Interpretation services
Qualifications

  • 2-5 years or more of continuous sobriety.
  • Working knowledge of OIAA as demonstrated by previous experience on OIAA committees as an IGR or individual member.
  • Education or equivalent experience in:
    • Scheduling of any kind.
  • Ability to:
    • Step in for the Chair as needed.
    • Liaise with standing committees and the OIAA Board, as needed.
  • Comfortable working in a multicultural, multilingual online setting.

Alternate Chair of Archives
Qualifications

  • 2-5 years or more of continuous sobriety.
  • Working knowledge of OIAA as demonstrated by previous experience on OIAA committees as an IGR or individual member.
  • Education or equivalent experience in:
    • Online document organization.
    • Academic or Archival assessment of data.
    • Ability to produce high quality presentations of Archived materials.
  • Step in for the Chair as needed.
  • Comfortable working in a multicultural, multilingual online setting.

What the Communications Committee Does:  

  • Produces short educational videos that represent all aspects of OIAA.
  • Proofreads, edits and formats routinely used documents and the OIAA website.
  • Coordinates the translation of documents.
  • Schedules OIAA interpreters for real time meetings.
  • Works with the Technology committee to maintain design consistency.
  • Creates and maintains a professional quality Archive; provides access to those documents, as needed; produces high quality Archival presentations, as needed.
  • Produces and maintains a document control record for all of the above.

Instructions:  

The scope of the responsibility and authority of each committee is outlined in a committee charter to be reviewed every two years or as necessary.  While each committee can have different roles, many will have similar roles. For example, each committee will most likely have a committee Chair and a Secretary with similar responsibilities and qualifications. Each committee will have certain roles unique to the mission it has to discharge.

OIAA’s Bylaws Article 5 provides additional committee detail including definitions pertaining to their duration, creation of, dissolution of, record maintenance and reporting requirements.
