Mission and Purpose: 

 

The Public Information Committee’s primary purpose is to carry the AA message to the alcoholic who still suffers. The Committee promotes the unity of online AA groups in accordance with Tradition One; carries the message of AA in accordance with Tradition Five; and responds to the needs of the online AA groups in accordance with Tradition Nine. The Committee provides a central source of information about OIAA and answers general questions about our website; the OIAA organization; listed online meetings; the directory; requests for general information; and complaints or directs those concerns to the appropriate committee for a response.  

 

Roles: 

 

    • Duties
      • The Public Information Committee Chair reviews incoming requests; ensures that all requests are answered timely; maintains the PIC shared Drive; organizes realtime committee meetings as needed; and is available to assist and mentor committee members. The term of service is 2 years, from January 1st of year one through December 31st of year two, excluding a term by appointment.
      • The Public Information Committee Alternate Chair shares the duties outlined for the Chair. If the Chair is temporarily unable to serve or resigns, the Alternate Chair moves into the Chair’s position. The term of service is 2 years, from January 1st of year one through December 31st of year two, excluding a term by appointment.  
  • Public Information Committee members serve at will. 
  • Suggested qualifications for Public Information Committee volunteers are one year or more of sobriety; a solid grounding in the AA traditions; and good written communication skills. Bilingual or multilingual language skills are especially useful as the Committee receives requests in languages other than English. 

What we do/Tasks: 

 

The Public Information Committee answers about 50 to 100 requests per month. Those come from the website or are referred from other OIAA committees or members. The Committee provides a central source of information about OIAA and answers a variety of questions about our website; the OIAA organization; listed online meetings; the directory; requests for general information; and complaints.

Instructions:  

The scope of the responsibility and authority of each committee is outlined in a committee charter to be reviewed every two years or as necessary.  While each committee can have different roles, many will have similar roles. For example, each committee will most likely have a committee Chair and a Secretary with similar responsibilities and qualifications. Each committee will have certain roles unique to the mission it has to discharge.

OIAA’s Bylaws Article 5 provides additional committee detail including definitions pertaining to their duration, creation of, dissolution of, record maintenance and reporting requirements.
